Senecio radicans
Family: Asteraceae

Native Region
South Africa (Eastern Cape)
A good String of Bananas basket has plump curved leaves close along the stems. Long bare strings are not a win if the leaves are thin, spaced out, or wrinkled.
The plant stores water in each banana-shaped leaf. That makes leaf shape a better care signal than the soil surface alone.
This page is different from String of Pearls. String of Bananas is usually faster and a little more forgiving, but it still hates wet crowns.
A short full basket beats a long sparse one. The top has to stay alive because that is where new trails keep starting.
The buying choice is about texture and fragility. Some trailing succulents look similar online but behave very differently when you water, move, or prune them.
If you want a thicker succulent that stands upright, Jade Plant is the better match.
String of Bananas needs bright indirect light with some gentle sun to keep vines dense. Weak light makes the stems stretch and the leaves shrink.
A high shelf far from a window often fails because the top of the basket gets too little light. The hanging strings may look fine for a while while the crown thins.
Move it closer before you fertilize. More food will not fix a vine that cannot see enough light.
If you only have medium light, Neon Pothos gives a brighter trailing look with less succulent risk.

Wait until the mix dries and the leaves feel slightly less firm. Then water the whole root ball and let the basket drain fully.
Do not water because the top looks dusty. A hanging basket can stay damp at the crown while the exposed vines look dry.
Soft leaves near the soil line mean the basket stayed wet too long. Stop watering and check the crown before saving cuttings.
The useful signal is a slight change in leaf firmness; a fully collapsed vine means the basket stayed dry too long.

Use a gritty succulent mix in a hanging pot with real drainage. A decorative bowl without holes turns the crown into the first failure point.
A shallow basket often works better than a deep pot because the roots dry faster and the crown gets more air.
This is where String of Bananas differs from ZZ Plant. Both store water, but a trailing succulent crown rots faster in a wet pot.
The easiest cuttings come from healthy vine tips. Lay a node on dry-to-lightly-moist mix and pin it down so the node touches the surface.
Do not bury a long vine. Buried stems rot. Pin a few nodes, keep the leaves above the mix, and wait for roots before watering heavily.
If you like node propagation but want a pet-safe plant, String of Turtles is a better indoor choice.
Make the first refill cut before the top goes bald. A healthy cutting roots faster than an emergency cutting from a failing crown.
Mealybugs often start near the crowded crown and new tips. By the time the whole trail looks thin, the plant may also have a light or root problem.
Separate pest damage from dry leaves. Pests leave cottony patches, sticky residue, or distorted new growth. Thirst leaves the bananas wrinkled but still clean.
If the crown is failing, take clean tip cuttings first. Pest treatment cannot rebuild a rotten center.
When the crown is mushy, take clean tips before you treat pests or change fertilizer.
Spring is the best time to root cuttings back into the top of the basket. That keeps the plant full instead of ending with a bald crown and long strings.
In winter, water less and accept slower growth. A bright cool window can hold the basket, but it will not refill quickly.
For a hanging plant that wants more moisture and less sun, compare Satin Pothos.
String of Bananas is not pet-safe, and the dangling vines invite chewing. Hang it for light first and for pet control second.
A high bright hook works better than a dark bookcase. If you need a pet-safe hanging look, Spider Plant is safer and easier to replace.
Trim vines before they reach a pet path. Waiting until they hang low makes the whole basket easier to pull down.
For a low-water upright plant that stays out of pet reach more easily, Raven ZZ Plant is a cleaner choice.
