System Architecture v2.4

Content Methodology & Data Standards

Accuracy, Structure, and Authority. We're building the world's most comprehensive landscaping encyclopedia using programmatic architecture and rigorous data validation.

At KnowTheYard, we don't just write about plants; we engineer data structures that allow us to understand the relationships between soil, climate, and botany at scale.

Our goal is to organize the world's landscaping data into a queryable, comparable, and actionable format. Unlike traditional gardening blogs that rely on anecdotal evidence, our platform is built on a relational database of over 14,000 verified plant species, cross-referenced with USDA climate models and soil composition charts. This document outlines the standards we use to maintain integrity across our programmatic pages.

Plant Profile Schema

Before we can discuss cultivation, we must first standardize identity. Our schema acts as the DNA for every page, ensuring that a Red Maple is never confused with a Japanese Maple, structurally or botanically.

Every plant profile on KnowTheYard is generated from a strict JSON-LD schema extended from the standard Product and BiologicalEntity types. This ensures our data is not only readable by humans but perfectly parsed by search engines and agricultural APIs.

USDA Zone Accuracy

Identifying the plant is only step one. The critical question for our users is "will it survive?" We bridge botanical identity with geographic reality through hyper-local climate data mapping.

We utilize the 2023 USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map data, updated with a localized granularity of 0.5 miles. While many sites generalize zones by state, our database queries by zip code vector polygons.

This allows us to flag micro-climates where a Zone 6b plant might survive in a protected Zone 6a pocket.

Real-time vector matching against USDA datasets.

The Comparison Framework

Data becomes insight only when it is contextualized. Our programmatic engine dynamically generates comparisons, pitting plants against one another to reveal the best choice for specific constraints.

The Comparison Framework normalizes disparate data points—height, water needs, bloom time—into a unified scoring system. This allows "apples to oranges" comparisons (or more accurately, "Hostas to Ferns") based on utility rather than biology.

Hydration Index

Normalizes "inches per week" against "drought tolerance" ratings to create a 0-10 water dependency score.

Factor 02

Solar Efficiency

Calculates photosynthetic potential based on shade tolerance vs. bloom yield in low-light scenarios.

Factor 03

Toxicity Matrix

Binary flags for pet and child safety crossed with severity of reaction (dermal vs ingestion).

terrain
Factor 04

Soil Compatibility

Matches PH range and drainage requirements to common regional soil profiles.
