1. Overwatering and Root Rot
Likelihood: HighAloe leaves become soft, translucent, and droop when roots sit in wet soil. Prolonged moisture invites fungal root rot that kills root tissue and prevents the plant from taking up water, so leaves collapse despite wet soil.
Identification
- remove_circle_outlineSoil is soggy a day or more after watering and often smells faintly musty.
- remove_circle_outlineLeaves feel mushy at the base and may show brown or black spots where tissue is damaged.
- remove_circle_outlinePot has no drainage or saucer is full of standing water.

The Fix
- 1Stop watering immediately and let the soil surface dry for several days.
- 2Gently remove the plant from its pot, trim rotten, black, or mushy roots, and discard badly infected soil.
- 3Repot into a fresh well-draining cactus/succulent mix and a pot with drainage holes; see advice on using proper drainage holes and saucers.
- 4If decay was advanced, cut away deeply damaged leaves and keep the plant in bright indirect light while roots recover.
- 5Follow a careful watering routine: water thoroughly, then only when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry; avoid letting the pot sit in a water-filled saucer.
