1. Late planting or weak cold exposure
Likelihood: HighGarlic needs enough cool weather to root, vernalize, and begin strong spring growth. When cloves go in too late, or mild-winter cloves are not chilled, plants may stay leafy and thin instead of forming full bulbs.
Identification
- remove_circle_outlineBulbs are uniformly small across the bed, not just in one wet or shaded patch.
- remove_circle_outlinePlants grew late, thin, or weak before spring bulb sizing.
- remove_circle_outlineCloves were planted after soil had already turned too cold for root growth.
- remove_circle_outlineMild-winter plantings produced rounds or poorly divided bulbs.
The Fix
- 1Plant fall Garlic early enough for roots to establish before hard winter.
- 2In mild climates, pre-chill seed cloves for 8-10 weeks before planting when your cultivar needs cold.
- 3Choose hardneck types for colder regions and softneck types where winters are mild.
- 4Use the largest clean cloves for planting; tiny cloves usually make smaller plants.
- 5Do not save planting stock from the smallest bulbs unless the variety is intentionally small.
