1. Temperature stress (late frost / cold injury)
Likelihood: HighSudden cold snaps, late frosts, or multiple nights below a camellia's tolerance cause swollen buds to abort and drop. Bud tissues ice internally or desiccate from freeze-thaw cycles, and whole buds often fall without opening. This is the most common cause in late winter to early spring when buds are swollen but not yet open.
Identification
- remove_circle_outlineWhole clusters of buds fall at once after a known cold night or frost
- remove_circle_outlineBuds may look water-soaked, blackened at the tip, or show brown interiors when cut open
- remove_circle_outlineLeaves may be unaffected or show only mild tip browning while buds are lost
- remove_circle_outlineTiming correlates with recent cold weather or sudden temperature dips
